the recent development on the establishment of a Common Bar Course(CBC) and the requirement for the law graduates to sit for an examination called Common Bar Examination(CBE)before being called to the bar was announce by the Minister Datuk Zaid Ibrahim. these requirements are believed to ensure the quality of law graduates deciding to practice as a lawyer.
though the objective is clearly good, but it instills some doubt and uneasiness among the fresh law graduates. "what? another course and examination to be followed?". "ahh..i thought after 4 years learning law, it is over. now i need to follow another course and sit for examination". these are among the things that the law graduates think. well, life full with thorns. we will be a better person if we can go through it succesfully.
during my previous semester, i've read an article wrote by a lawyer. the article was given by my Professional Practice's lecturer. in fact i still keep it. it is a very interesting article to read. the writer begin the article by bringing the law students/graduates to think what means by examinations/tests? does we only confine tests/examination with those we faced after each semesters? if yes, then we are wrong.
why?? because as i said before, life full with thorns. throughout our life, there are series of tests. even after we graduates and we manage to be called to the bar, we will be facing a lot of tests. among them are concern with our integrity, our disciplines, professionalism etc. these are the tests that we are going to face later. if we failed, the are possibilities of disciplinary action being taken against us. well, the CBC and CBE are only a little part of the tests awaiting us out there.
my hope is that, whatever new policy implemented by the government, the proper modus operandi must follow. hopefully it will help to ensure that all new practising lawyers are equipped with the adequate legal skills.
